18 Feb Sunnywest delivery trucks with the cream cans
Each of the cream cans had a plate soldered on with the farmer’s name, weight of the can on the lid and on the bottom so there would be no mix ups at the factory. After the cans were emptied at the factory, the main can for each farmer would have a slip of paper put into it, on which the following was recorded; the farmers name, amount of cans, weight and the test result for butter fat. This slip measured one inch wide and ten inches long.
The return of the cream cans was used for bartering and communication. The farmer couldn’t get into town much, so meat, bread and papers were brought around in the afternoon and this was put in the same can as the slip and sometimes there was butter put in as well.
