Message From Our President

The Busselton Historical Society has undergone several transformations since its establishment in 1938. After going into recess during World War II, the Society resumed its activities in 1960 and began to flourish. A dedicated committee was formed to document and preserve local history. Initially, they faced challenges finding a central meeting space, so gatherings took place in members’ homes and at a local primary school. A group of committed women met every Tuesday at Jack Taylor’s residence on Foursomes Road to type, collect newspaper clippings, and chronicle local history. These records remain an essential part of the Society’s archives.

In 1975, the acquisition of the Old Butter Factory provided the Society with a permanent meeting place, as well as a secure location for storing research materials, papers and files. This new space also allowed for the display of artefacts that had previously been scattered among members. The committee decided to hold a small exhibition for the Festival of Busselton, which opened to the public for the first time on January 18, 1975. This marked the beginning of the Busselton Museum, which continues to thrive today thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Society members.

We look forward to your visit to the Busselton Museum.
